Samick Pianos for Auction

Slosberg quality sale. Barry S. Sloberg Inc.'s two-day sale of antiques and decorative arts Sunday and Monday at the gallery at 2501 E. Ontario St. in Port Richmond will offer top-quality musical instruments, unusual gold and silver pieces - and some presale estimates that Slosberg says reflect changes in the economy.

The instruments, pianos by Yamaha and Samick and an Oscar Adler Sonora bassoon, will be offered at the Sunday session beginning at 10 a.m., with each of the three expected to sell for around $2,000 to $3,500. That session will feature 100 lots of Asian arts; 75 lots of artwork, including works by Alfred Bendiner, Julius Bloch, and a landscape by Joseph Bokshai with a presale estimate of $8,000 to $10,000; a collection of atomizers; and a 1900 key-wound Elliott of London mahogany gothic-style nine-tube chiming tall-case clock with moon phases.

Monday's session, beginning at 4 p.m., will as usual be devoted to gold, silver, jewelry, and art glass, including a Tiffany lamp in an acorn pattern that should bring $10,000 to $12,000; a massive Bailey & Co. sterling tea set with a presale estimate of $6,000 to $10,000; and a rare Hurst & Kingsbury 14-karat-gold choker necklace that should sell for $2,000 to $4,000. (Hurst & Kingsbury usually worked in silver, according to Slosberg.)

Slosberg hopes the jewelry in Monday's session will do well because of the rising gold market. On the other hand, the Elliott case clock that once would have sold for $6,000 to $8,000 now is likely to go for half that amount because of the economy.

"There are a lot of bargains to be had at auction today compared with just one year ago," he said this week.

Previews are from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to sale time on Sunday, and 2 p.m. to sale time on Monday. For further information call 215-425-7030 or go to www.bssauction.com.
